Toolbox Talk - March 31, 2026

Stretching and flexing at the beginning of the day.

Last week at Pine Energy, our toolbox talk was about proper stretch and flex.

On a commercial solar site, the work is physically demanding from the moment the day starts. This is true whether we're on a rooftop or a ground mount. We emphasize proper preparation.

Stretching is a warm-up rather than a cooldown. The goal is to raise body temperature and increase blood flow to the muscles before physical work begins. This makes muscles more pliable and less prone to injury. A few minutes of gentle movement before you lift, climb, or pull makes a difference over the course of a day. And over the course of a career.

We covered the basics in our toolbox talk. Warm up before you stretch. Light movement first such as walking, arm swings, shoulder circles, hip circles, and high knees. Stretching a cold muscle is counterproductive.

Stretch gently and steadily. Each stretch should be held for 20 to 30 seconds. No bouncing. No pushing past the point of pain. Breathe normally throughout. If it hurts, stop.

We covered four areas specific to the demands of our work:

Back: hands on lower back, bend side to side, arch back slowly.

Legs and knees: stand on one leg, reach behind your back, pull your foot up and forward.

Shoulders: slow circular arm movements, each arm, each direction.

Neck: slow circular motion, clockwise and counterclockwise, using your hand to gently assist.

And as always, stop if you're injured. Report it. No stretch is a substitute for rest and treatment when something is wrong.

None of this takes long. All of it is worth doing.
