Toolbox Talk - First Day Back
Building the Unirac RM5 system in Ashburn, Virginia.
This week at Pine Energy, our toolbox talk is about the first day back after extended time away. This is apt because we just enjoyed the Fourth of July and a nice, long break.
Coming back from a holiday or a vacation is one of the more overlooked risk moments in construction. Seems like a small thing, and maybe it is. But a strong safety program focuses on the small things too.
Here's what we covered:
Don't rush. After time away, the instinct can be to jump in and prove you're back in the rhythm. Rushing reduces the quality of the work. It also increases the chance of skipping safety steps. Pre-plan the work. Know the hazards. Use the right tools and PPE.
Related to rushing, guard against complacency. Experience is valuable. It is not armor. The belief that familiarity with the work makes someone invulnerable is exactly the mindset that leads to accidents. Accidents happen to experienced workers too. Stay tuned to the risk in each specific situation.
Monitor fatigue closely. Construction is physically demanding even on a good day. After a holiday weekend, conditioning may have dipped. Heat, noise, and vibrating tools add to the load. Sleep, diet, and emotional state also affect how the body handles a workday. We asked superintendents and fellow installers to watch out for each other.
At Pine Energy, we take time off through scheduled holidays and earned PTO. This is important time to recharge and reconnect. A focus on a safe return seems like a small thing, but it’s an important thing.
