Toolbox Talk - Heat Illness Prevention
Building in Leesburg, Virginia.
Last week at Pine Energy, our toolbox talk was about heat illness prevention.
We're working on rooftops and ground mounts across the Southeast and beyond. Heat is a genuine hazard this time of year, which we know from multiple years and hundreds of projects of experience.
Here's what we covered:
Hydrate before, during, and after work. While working, drink regularly and consistently, even without feeling thirsty. For longer shifts, electrolyte drinks are best. Avoid energy drinks. Too much sugar.
Take rest breaks in shade or a cool area. The body needs time to recover. Don’t push through.
Dress for the heat. Light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing is ideal. If wearing a face covering, make a change when it’s wet or soiled.
Know individual vulnerability. Even workers who are acclimated to the heat need to be careful. Health conditions and medications can change how the body responds to heat. What feels manageable for one person may not be for another.
Watch out for each other. Check on teammates verbally and often. Symptoms of heat illness include heat rash, muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, weakness, and exhaustion.
Know the signs of an emergency. Slurred speech, lack of sweating, seizures, loss of consciousness, or abnormal behavior are serious. Call 911 immediately. Cool the worker with water or ice and stay with them until first responders arrive.
The heat doesn't care how experienced anyone is or how tough they feel. It has to be taken seriously every single day.
